Man leads ISP on chase, attempts to carjack, and flees into lake | North Idaho News Now

A Spokane man found himself in Bonner County Jail after leading police on a high-speed chase, fleeing by foot, attempting to hijack a vehicle, and then jumping into Cocolalla Lake, all on Tuesday.

ISP responded to a report of a reckless driver around 4:15 pm on Highway 53 near Highway 41 in Rathdrum.

The state police located the vehicle traveling 20 miles above the speed limit on northbound U.S. 95.

44-year-old Jacob Gopal Cunningham allegedly lost the trooper after he drove into a neighborhood.

Around 5:15 pm, another ISP trooper spotted Cunningham at Westmond Road on U.S. 95. The trooper approached him and the man jumped back into the vehicle and drove off, hitting the trooper's car.

ISP pursued the suspect south on U.S. 95 where the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and tried to enter a Jeep.

The responding trooper then deployed their stun gun to try and stop the suspect, but it didn't work. Cunningham then ran into the lake.

An ISP supervisor dived into the neck-deep water and brought the suspect onto the shore.

Cunningham faces multiple charges including eluding a peace officer, malicious injury to property, possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine, the introduction of contraband into a correctional facility, possession of an open container, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting and obstructing a peace officer, driving without privileges, speeding, and driving without insurance.

He also had two felony warrants out of the State of Washington.

The Lexus Cunningham was driving was reported stolen from Washington. Troopers are searching for the driver of the Jeep Cunningham tried to carjack. If you have any information about the owner, you're asked to contact the ISP Coeur d'Alene Office at (208) 209-8620.
